Bread of Life Food Ministry
The Bread of Life is run by volunteers and contributions from the community. We do weekly pickups at local supermarkets and Costco. Also, our church congregation brings donations each week when they come for services. We obtain produce from a family that owns a produce business and caters to local Farmers Markets. We never know what will come in each week, or how much. We are thankful for what we receive. The greatest reward is that the recipients of these food items are very grateful and keep coming back each month.
About half of our non-perishable foods come through the Long beach Post Office Food Drive which takes place once a year in May. Since our fire in October of 2008, we have had different organizations have “food drives” for the Bread of Life. Since February 2009 we have been back in our store front facility and giving out food just as fast as it comes in. We are always looking for more food sources to stock our Food pantry shelves.
Who We Are
Bread of Life is a ministry of Calvary Chapel North Long Beach. It provides food to the needy people in the North Long Beach area. Beginning in 1995 as a small food pantry, the Bread of Life food ministry now currently serves hundreds of people in Long Beach. Food is distributed every second and fourth Wednesday of each month. If someone is in need food people are asked to register from 8:30 to 9:30. At 9:30 there is a 40 minute Chapel Service, childcare is provided. Food distribution begins at 10:15.
From 9:30-10:15 we have a Bible study in the Fellowship Hall of Calvary Chapel for those who would like to attend (and most do!) After the service we often have people come up for prayer and then we call out the numbers beginning with 1-10 and disabled. They proceed to the Bread of Life which just a few feet from the church where we call them through the building. We have our volunteers at different stations handing out starting with the heaviest items: bags of already packaged canned goods, including canned vegetables, fruit, meal-in-a-can, beans and rice and sometimes other packaged meal helpers. We have the other side of the room lined with various kinds of breads and corn and flour tortillas. Also they receive bags stuffed with fresh vegetables and fruit. At the very end of the line we offer cakes, cookies and pies and anything else that has been donated.
